Thaxted is a town in Uttlesford which is a district of northwest Essex, England. It has a modern day population of approximately 2845 people.
People have lived in Thaxted for over one thousand years and it has a recorded history which dates back to before the Domesday Book.
The town had a rapid expansion in the 14th century, as from the 13th century it had become a cutlery industry centre. A large number of the population were employed in the cutlery trade. The cutlery industry in Thaxted appears to have died out by the sixteenth century.
